Ever since I was very young, my life has revolved around the love of three things – art, nature and spirit. Accordingly, my art, as well as my science, has always been a means to explore the nature of spirit and the spirit of nature. There are two ways in which to explore spirit in nature: the
literal and the
symbolic. In my traditional, or literal, impressionist approach, my artwork focuses on the beautiful effect of light on form and colour, giving you a dazzling and joyful impression of the spirit of nature; of a connectedness to the landscape and those who dwell in it, and oneness with spirit. These works focus on my response to the glorious light, colour and texture that I sense before me, both through my eyes, and through my heart. I love the sensuousness of responding to nature directly through knife painting with thick, buttery oils en plein air. In contrast, my contemporary artwork focuses on the symbolic nature of spirit. I capture the dreamlike, semi-abstract subconscious’ response to spirit and nature, and it thus becomes a study in essence and metaphor; of the metamorphosis of energetic forms - opposites and contrast that make up our reality, and our inherent ability to create and to manifest. These works are completed in-studio, using multiple layers of transparent acrylics and mixed media. The resultant images of nature invoke the luminous beauty of light shining through stained glass, metaphorically revealing that there are many layers – and meanings - to the perception of reality. I am currently focused on creating a series of paintings with the theme of "The Flowering of Consciousness".
