How to Select and Buy Art: Rule #2

Rule #2: Colour

With respect to colour, you can go with a couple of different approaches. One is to go with whatever colours are in the artwork that you are considering. Enjoy the colours that the artist has selected to express her/his vision. Colour is one of those things that people respond to on a primal level, and can be one of the things that attracts you to a certain piece to begin with.

Help! I love this piece but it clashes with my décor colour scheme! What do I do?
If it potentially clashes with your décor there is the option of placing a wide neutral mat between the artwork and the frame to visually isolate the painting. Other options include picking the painting you love anyway and either re-do the colour scheme or find a different spot for that particular painting.
I have a collector who loved a painting so much that she designed the colour scheme and décor around the painting!

Another approach is to pick your favourite artwork within the confines of artworks available with neutral palettes or palettes compatible with your current colours. A lot of traditional styles of artwork such as nature, still life, and figurative work, have colours that fit in with most colour schemes.
