Where have I been!?!

I have been trying something new lately!

I have been trying to get more proficient with a painting, or palette, knife. First of all because it is very difficult to master (I like a challenge) and second of all because it is VERY environmentally friendly, since with oils you do not have to use mineral spirits (thinner) to thin the paint or clean your brushes. And with acrylics you don't even need water!

There are very few artists out there who paint solely with a knife, and fewer still who are good at it. Most artists try it and give it up soon after since their results are not up to the quality they expect of their work. But I have to consider it philosophically! How many musicians trained on a piano could pick up a violin and be an instant master?! I venture to say NONE.

So with that in mind, I present for you some of my new works:

Anzus Lake, 2.5x3.5 inches, oils on canvas board.

Autumn Morning II, 5x8 inches, oils on panel. The colours here are a bit off - too yellow.

Evening Light, 4x8 inches, acrylics on polylinen on board.

Once again the pic can't do it justice! The colours are much richer in person.

I must say, for my own preference I don't really enjoy those knife paintings where the surface resembles stucco. I much prefer the work of Louisa McElwain and Carol Swinney.

I really like how these have turned out so far, and as I progress I will turn to more complicated pieces. I like the simplified, graphic, almost abstract nature of these ones though - very much in line with the thoughts behind the Essences series.
